SERVICE 03 / ALLOCATION CONTROL

Redistribution
& Inventory Routing

Recovered stock needs a destination, not a holding area. Route units against demand, condition, channel and regional constraints.

Map Inventory Routes
Recovered inventory staged and labelled by redistribution destination

What it covers

Redistribution connects recovery decisions with available demand. The work identifies which stock can return to primary inventory, which belongs in another region, and which needs a secondary channel or further review.

Routing rules can use condition, product age, location, language pack, packaging state, channel restrictions and local demand. The rules should be explicit. A unit without a destination remains operationally unresolved.

Typical workflow

  1. Confirm the item’s grade, identity and release status.
  2. List eligible destinations and channel constraints.
  3. Compare available stock with regional demand and planned replenishment.
  4. Select a route and record the ownership handoff.
  5. Release, stage and reconcile the movement at destination.

When it is useful

Use this service when recovered products sit in local warehouses while another region needs stock, or when secondary-market routing is handled through informal decisions. It is useful for multi-country retail structures with different channels and inventory owners.

Operational issues

Frequent problems include duplicate stock records, unclear ownership, incompatible packaging, outdated demand signals and destination rules that ignore product category. Cross-border movements may involve different documentation, tax or customs considerations. These requirements vary by country and transaction type.

Advantages and limitations

A routing model improves visibility and reduces avoidable internal transfers. It does not create demand or remove the need for transport planning. It also cannot override safety, warranty, product compliance or commercial restrictions.

Selection criteria

Define route eligibility, destination ownership, release authority, stock-status codes and reconciliation steps. Separate “available”, “held”, “in transit” and “received” states. Make exceptions visible rather than burying them in comments.

Good for

Retailers operating across regions, brands with several channels, marketplaces with distinct condition rules and organisations consolidating recovery inventory.

What to know

Inventory visibility is a control discipline. A route is complete only when the receiving destination confirms the unit and its status.
